James and Terrence watched the day of the wedding as Franklin and his family backed out of the two-car garage in his SUV. Franklin had on a leather plague doctor’s mask, which had a huge beak, his wife a Venetian peacock mask, and Junior wore an eighteen-century jester’s mask.

James broke through Franklin’s firewall within minutes, deactivated his security system, and went to work. His fingers moved lightning-quick on his laptop as he searched for a backup trigger, a failsafe mechanism that skilled hackers implemented. James found the backdoor and deactivated that.

His laptop slapped shut. “Let’s go!”

The agents went to the back of the home; the glass double doors were hardly challenging. Terrence easily picked the lock, and the moment they stepped inside the modest-sized house, it was on. They were almost salivating at their mouths as they took off in separate directions.

“I’ll cover the upper level; you take the main,” James ordered as he took two steps at a time, heading toward the master bedroom.

There wasn’t an inch of the home that wasn’t opened, kicked, pulled, or tapped looking for secret passages. Three hours later, they found nothing.

Back in his sedan, James peeled out. He asked, “Where would he keep that amount of cash? If I’m him, I don’t leave that in New York.”

“Nah,” Terrence began. “No way would I take that chance.”

“Safe deposit box?”

“Nope! He’s dirty. And if he’s ever indicted, that’s the first place law enforcement looks.”

“He buried it,” James concluded as he spun his sedan around dramatically, making a wide U-turn. “We didn’t check the yard.”

Terrence tapped his watch. “Time, Dough. It’s not on our side.”

James smiled wickedly. “Sure, it is. And should the family come home while we’re looking for our money—”

“Then we lullaby them. Point blank...”

James finished with, “Period.”
